Corn kernels are protected first by a layer of silky threads, and then by tough leaves. π½Β
In my recent blog post Corn on a Raw Diet, you already learned that in the season of fresh and young sweet corn (in my experience, the tastiest sweet corn sub variety is available in early September), you can easily collect the corn silk when cleaning the corn cobs.
You can store corn silk in a mason jar for a couple of days.Β πΒ
I suggest that you cover the bottom of the jar with a piece of paper towel, as this will extend the shelf life of the fresh corn silk, but only for a couple of days.
To extend the shelf life of corn silk for a longer period, it is necessary to dehydrate it. You can effectively use a dehydrator for this purpose.Β

Of course, you can always just buy corn silk tea. Just pay attention to the quality of the tea bags, or better yet, buy loose corn silk tea, that is without tea bags.
Corn silk tea is caffeine free. Caffeine acts as a stimulant, which eventually wears out the adrenal glands, resulting in chronic fatigue.
On the other hand, this crystal clear tea with a mild, but pleasant taste is rich in active substances that have a positive effect on health. Just some of them are:
- phytosterols
- flavonoids
- polyphenols
- vitamin C
- vitamin K
- potassium salts
Due to all these active ingredients, corn silk tea has a positive effect on the body in the following ways:
π½ π« It stimulates the creation of urine without burdening the urinary tract. Thus, you can use corn silk tea to reduce bloating and swelling of the body.
π½ π« It has a beneficial effect on the urinary tract, helping to reduce the symptoms of bladder inflammation, prostate inflammation, urinary tract infections and nocturia.
π½ π« Consuming this tea helps dissolve kidney stones and expel sand from the kidneys.
π½ π« In folk medicine, this tea is also used to regulate blood sugar and cholesterol levels.
π½ π« As this tea is a diuretic that supports kidney function and thus blood filtration, it also helps the body get rid of accumulated toxins in the bloodstream.
π½ π« It has a beneficial effect on the digestive system and relieves stomach pain.
Contraindications:
β οΈπ« corn allergy
β οΈπ« pregnancy
β οΈπ« Β breastfeeding
Preparation:
π§ Fill the kettle with some purified water. The quality and purity of water is of crucial importance for health. Personally, I use a tankless reverse osmosis water filter.Β

- Let the water heat up to the boiling point.
- Put the corn silk in the teapot.
- Pour the boiling water over the corn silk and let it sit for about 15 minutes.
- Fill you tea cup with this crystal clear tea, and enjoy this pleasant, warm drink. π΅Β
I hope you will enjoy the relaxing effect of this pleasant tea, and that this tea will help you get rid of potential health challenges.
To your health!
