What Is a Supervised Water Fast?

Supervised water fast is the oldest, the most powerful and the most effective self-healing process instinctively performed by all animal species in nature when injured or poisoned. 

Therapeutic water fasting is NOT just not eating. Therapeutic water fasting provides for the deepest possible rest of the body on all levels: 

  • physical rest – resting in a supine position, as much as possible with eyes closed to achieve a deeply soothing, sleepy state of the body
  • physiologic rest – turning off the work of the digestive tract for an extended period of time through abstinence from any type of nutrient, except for water, which is extremely important for detoxification
  • sensory rest – surrounding of pleasant views, sounds and smells
  • emotional rest – elimination of worry by redirecting thoughts to the positive results to be achieved through a water fast

How Does an Extended Absolute Rest Heal?

Through an absolute rest of the body, mind and soul for an extended period of time, the body enters a deep resting state. In this resting state the body immediately begins to work on self-cleansing and self-healing.

One of the reasons why sleeping at night is extremely important for the health of the body is that during that unconscious, sleeping state, the body gets the opportunity to UNINTERRUPTEDLY direct all its vital body energy to self-healing processes.

In ideal living conditions, that is, in conditions where the body is not exposed to toxins and the mind is not exposed to stressful situations every day, a good night’s rest would be perfectly sufficient to maintain a high level of health. 

However, if it happens that the body is oversaturated with toxins, it is necessary to extend that night’s rest for a long enough period. In this prolonged rest, the body can perform a deep self-cleansing by breaking down the body fat, and thus expelling the toxins from the body.

Do Multiple Short Fasts Achieve the Same Result as One Long Fast?

The short and direct answer to this question is: no.

Here is the explanation: 

  • Imagine you want to get from point A to point B.
  • You start your journey between the two points, but half way you suddenly go back to the point A. You repeat this halfway crossing several times.
  • You’ll never reach the point B.

The same is the case with water fasting. During water fasting, certain changes occur in the physiology of the body. As the time goes on in the fast these physiological changes become more pronounces. Thus, the fast becomes increasingly more and more effective with each new day. Each time the water fast is broken, these physiological changes return to their initial state. 

When fasting properly, and for a sufficient time, the body performs deep cleansing and self-healing.

Fasting Is Not Starving

People often say that water fasting is starving. The immense difference between fasting and starving is important to understand.

Therapeutic water fasting includes a complete abstinence from food in conditions ideal for resting. While fasting the body utilises body fat for fuel, since it is receiving no food. As toxins are stored in fat cells, fasting provides ideal conditions for eliminating toxins.

The body continues to fuel itself during the water fast, utilising stored body fat.

This consumption of fat deposits, and thus the elimination of toxins from the body, is the very essence of self-cleansing and self-healing of the body

And here lies that critical moment that is important to recognise: after all body fat has been utilised, starvation begins. Long before this crucial moment, we break the fast and introduce the food.

If food is not introduced once all body fat is used up, the body would enter starvation. In starvation the body starts to consume its muscles and other important bodily structures. Starvation always results in irreversible and serious damage, possibly death.

Typically, humans have enough body fat for months. The safety of each client is the professional supervisor’s primary concern .

Why Would Anyone Want to Fast?

Professionally supervised water fasts provide ideal conditions for self-cleansing and self-healing.

Fasting facilitates healing of various conditions, from acute symptoms such as headaches, skin problems, digestive disturbances, to chronic diseases that medicine has written off as incurable such as arthritis, asthma, atherosclerosis, heart diseases, allergies, and even early stage cancers.

People often decide to water fast after they have tried all other therapies. But the smarter move would be to fast right away.

What Diseases Can Be Healed through a Supervised Water Fast?

Although each case is individual, success in self-healing with water fasting depends on:

  • the level of damage that has already been done to the body
  • age – that is, how long the body has been exposed to harmful conditions

The percentage of achieving the desired health results through a supervised water fast is still extremely high, without the unwanted side effects that are almost always present in medical-pharmaceutical therapies* for chronic diseases. 

*Medical-pharmaceutical therapies also SAVE LIVES in emergency interventions and are the right choice for the treatment of certain acute conditions in which fasting is an unreasonable choice.

Below is a list of health conditions that usually can be eliminated through a supervised water fast:

Are there any Contraindications for a Water Fast?

Yes, there are contraindications for a water fast. Contraindications are those health conditions in which it is dangerous to carry out a specific therapy, even if that therapy is the most natural healing method of the body.

Fasting is contraindicated in the case of following health conditions:  

  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding
  • Dialysis condition
  • Type 1 diabetes
  • Certain mental states that manifest neurotic behaviours
  • A history of using certain medications
  • Anorexia

Why Is Supervision Important during a Water Fast?

One of the biggest mistakes is that people try to fast on their own, without any supervision, support and education regarding this natural, but very delicate process. At various times during a fast, people experience fear causing them to prematurely break their fast. If a fast is broken too early, desired results are not achieved.

  • Unknown Process

Water fasting is a natural process, but it is also unknown to most people because it is not taught in medical schools, nor is it typically practiced culturally. Thus, most people are unfamiliar with this process. If we combine this situation with the fact that due to the modern way of eating and living, most people do not know how to recognise the signs of their bodies, we get the conclusion that it is very dangerous to engage in water fasting on your own.

  • Surgery without a Scalpel

Water fasting is like surgery without a scalpel. Would anyone dare to perform a surgery on themselves without any guidance and knowledge? There is a good reason why surgeons are very important during surgeries.

Who Is the Supervisor and Educator at this Supervised Water Fast?

All the clients at the supervised water fast in Serbia are monitored, educated and cared for by an expert in the field of fasting, raw vegan diet, fitness and natural health, Dr. Douglas Graham.

What Does a Water Fast Supervisor Do?

A water fast supervisor has an extremely large responsibility for his fasting clients. First of all, the supervisor must be extremely well educated about the anatomy and physiology of the human body

Dr. Graham, the supervisor at our supervised water fast is a Doctor of Chiropractic. In order for a student to earn a doctorate in chiropractic, they must pass extremely rigorous exams through which they must prove their knowledge and understanding of how the human body works

In addition to knowledge in the field of chiropractic, Dr. Graham has extremely rich experience guiding thousands of clients from various parts of the world and with various diagnoses through water fasting since 1981

All his knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the human body, paired with his knowledge of a raw vegan diet, water fasting and health, along with all his personal and professional experience in the field of water fasting, Dr. Graham combines and uses to: 

  • First of all, review the application form and, based on the described condition of the registered person, conclude whether fasting would be SAFE and EFFECTIVE for the health condition of the person in question.
  • Interpret the vital signs and symptoms of the clients in an experienced way.
  • Advise on the amount of water clients should drink based on their vital signs.
  • Provide education and emotional support throughout the process.
  • Supervise each client carefully in order to decide when the moment is right to break the fast.
  • Guide the clients after the water fast on how to maintain a high level of health through the right dietary and lifestyle choices.

How Long Do Clients Fast at this Supervised Water Fast?

This is a very common question of almost every client who is thinking of embarking on this process. In most water fasting centres (which there are only a few in the world), the length of the fast is pre-determined generically. This approach is very practical for the organisation of the centre, but not justified in terms of the needs of the individual organism. 

The correct approach to determining the length of a water fast is to approach each client individually. Taking into account the client’s:

  • physical constitution
  • mental and emotional state
  • initial diagnosis
  • desired goals

each client is carefully monitored day by day. At the end of each day, we ask each client a question

  • Are you capable and willing to fast for the next 24 hours? 

With this question, clients get the power of control over their fast and the constant feeling that they are fasting for only 24 hours. And so we go day after day, until together we recognise when the client’s body shows signs that the fast should be broken.

The effectiveness of a fast increases with its length. Typically, our clients fast between 16 and 20 days.

What If You Do Not Have Time for this Whole Process?

Many people tell us that they would like to fast, but that the biggest obstacle for them is that the entire process lasts about 28 days in total. They say that they cannot break free from all their business, family and life commitments for so long.

We understand that this whole process is time demanding in today’s world. But then again, for many people this month might provide years, if not even DECADES, that they might not get otherwise.

If you just think about it… 28 days is such a small percentage of all time in an average lifespan.

And on the other hand, surgeries are followed by a several weeks, or even several months, long recoveries. Water fasting is a surgery without a scalpel, that requires about 3 weeks of fasting + about a week of refeeding.

Also, keep this in mind: water fasting is a process in which the body gets rid of the toxins that have been piling up inside the body for year and years. If all those years of toxin accumulation can be largely reversed in just 3 weeks, then it turns out that this whole process is not that long after all.

What Happens after the Water Fast?

After the water fast, clients stay with us for another 7-9 days, for the introduction of food and exercise.

The water fast is broken with the first meal. First, we introduce those foods that are the juiciest, and thus the easiest to process through the digestive system. Examples are watermelon and melons.

The amount of each meal is carefully determined, so that the digestive system is gradually and gently awakened to work. 

As the days pass, we introduce other fruits and vegetables, all along with daily physical activity.

Through this entire post-fasting process, clients gain a solid foundation on how to continue with their diet, exercise and lifestyle in order to maintain their high level of health.

Diet after the Fast

All of the team members of this event personally have been eating a low-fat raw vegan diet for years now. They also teach this way of eating to their clients. 

A low-fat raw vegan diet means that all meals consist of fresh fruits and vegetables, with moderate amounts of nuts and seeds in the evening meal. 

During the fast, and especially in the week after the fast, all clients will receive trustworthy education about a raw vegan diet. This way they will get a solid foundation that will help them continue to eat exactly the kind of diet that supports real, long-term health.

6 Months After the Fast Client's Observation

Half a year has passed since my supervised water fast. I’m all right. After the fast ended, I continued with a raw vegan diet.

Shortly after my supervised water fast, and due to my work, I had a systematic examination. The blood count was good, with all parameters within reference values, except for slightly decreaced vitamin D level. Blood pressure was 120/80, as before my fast it was around 160/100. I felt great!

Unfortunately, 3 months after my fast, I attended a family gathering at which I fell off my raw vegan diet. After that, it was hard for me to get back on the right track. Winter “cemented” my old dietary habits even more.

This experience clearly showed me the connection between diet and health, as well as how addictive the first bite of cooked food can be. I intend to go back to a raw vegan diet.

My undergraduate training in health and physical education gives me a comprehensive understanding on how to rebuild health and fitness post fast.

I completed my training with a doctoral degree in chiropractic medicine from Life University in 1983, where I learned first hand about the body’s inner workings and adopted the science, art, and philosophy known as Natural Hygiene, the science of human health.

I am the humble organiser of this event. Ironically, I never thought that I would ever organise supervised water fasts.

As a translator by trade, I translated Dr. Graham’s book, The 80 10 10 Diet in 2012. I was so fascinated by what I learned during that translation, that I applied for an internship with Dr. Graham at one of his events for the purpose of personal education about a raw diet and natural health. It turned out to be a supervised water fasting event that took place during January and February 2013 in Costa Rica. It was at that event that I came into contact with the entire philosophy of water fasting, which had been completely unknown to me until then.

In 2022, I did my own 21-day supervised water fast. After that experience, many of my followers asked me to start organising this event in Serbia. Although I was not willing to do it at first, I finally agreed. In June 2022, I organised the first supervised water fast on the mountain of Tara in Serbia. This event was followed by other supervised fasts in my organisation.

At our venue, our clients have the following amenities at their disposal: 

  • comfortable backyard with lawn, deckchairs and swimming pool
  • balcony for resting
  • free private parking
  • free wi-fi internet
  • towels, slippers and bedsheets

In addition, our clients are provided with a laundry service, as well as the change of bed sheets and towels once a week.

Clients are accommodated in two-room apartments. Each apartment has a bathroom and two rooms: one bedroom and one living room.

However, for the purposes of our program, each living room will be adapted to the conditions of a bedroom. 

In this way, 2 clients will be in separate rooms, while sharing the bathroom within one apartment.

The supervised water fast begins on August 2nd, 2024. and lasts in total of 28 days. 

All clients fast between 18 and 21 days (depending on the condition, initial diagnosis and desired goals of each individual client. After breaking the fast, the clients stay with us until August 28th on the process of introducing food and physical activity.

Participation Fee

For the supervised water fast registration fee, you receive the following services during your 28 days of the entire program:

  • Accommodation in a two-room apartment in the luxurious, newly built Villa Navigator
  • Cleaning services – laundry services, change of bed sheets and towels once a week

If you decide for any reason to cancel your participation in this event up to 4 weeks before the event itself, you are entitled to a refund of 80% of the deposit you made.

If you decide for any reason to cancel your participation in this event within 30 days before the event itself, there is no option to refund the deposit.

We care about your health and fitness. In order to ensure that you receive the most benefits from this fasting retreat, Dr. Graham himself will review your application for your supervised water fast. If, after a careful review of your application, Dr. Graham verifies that you would benefit from a fast, you will be invited to participate.  We want to be sure that you will be safe through the fast and gain maximum benefit from it.
